Osteopathy and Lower Back Pain, Written by Gold Coast Osteopath Miranda Cooper.

Lower back pain affects us all in one way or another, whether that is our own experience of back pain or living / knowing  someone else that suffers with it.

No back pain is the same, there can be various causes;

  • Joint pain/ sprain
  • Disc injury
  • Ligament injury
  • Strain to muscles
  • Referral from the hip
  • referral from pelvic organs (for example; endometriosis)
  • Scoliosis

Osteopaths are trained to assess and work out what the most probable cause of pain is. They perform Orthopaedic tests, nerve testing, muscle testing and active assessments as part of their treatment. From a thorough assessment, individual management plan can be formulated.

Management of lower back pain can involve;

  • Hands on treatment
  • Exercise rehabilitation
  • Pain education
  • Ergonomic assessment and advice
  • Referral for an image or other testing
  • Referral to the GP or other Health Professional i.e. Acupuncture for natural lower back pain relief
Osteopaths ensure that the management plan is individualised and specific to the type of injury, the patients’ goals and level of pain and function.
